ESTHER MARIE (HALL) JORDAN

Esther Marie (Hall) Jordan of Gloucester Point, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Gloucester House on Nov. 29, 2020. Esther was born in Maryus, Virginia, to James Olsie and Mary Esther (Shackelford) Hall on Aug. 13, 1929. She graduated Achilles High School in 1946 and then married Harry R. Jordan with whom she spent 71 happy years. Esther Marie had a successful career at the Naval Weapons Station, Yorktown, in Personnel from which she retired after many years of service. Esther was an accomplished pilot being one of the first women to earn a Virginia pilot’s license. She loved living on the water, boating, skiing, and cooking up all the bounty saltwater provides. She loved people and was an active member of the Abingdon Woman’s Club, Genealogical Society, Gloucester Historical Society, Rhododendron and Azalea Society, flower clubs and many more.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harry with whom she had two daughters—Norma (Jordan) Baker and Harriet Marie Jordan. She had two grandchildren, Jordan Baker and Karter Baker, as well as two great-grandchildren, Macie and Jax Baker. The family will have a private graveside service on the 10th of December. There will be a “Celebration of Life” service in the spring of 2021. The family wishes to extend our gratitude to the staff of Gloucester House and ask that memorial contributions be made to Commonwealth Cares, Gloucester House, 7657 Meredith Drive, Gloucester, Va. 23061 (Memo line on check “In Memory of Esther Jordan.”) Esther Marie would be pleased to help others at this time. “Lawdy Days,” she would say. “Help those in need for … I am not there, I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight, I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry.” Family guidance under the direction of Hogg Funeral Home.
