Essex beats MHS in regionals, 46-30

The Mathews High School girls’ basketball team played its final game of the 2022-2023 season on Tuesday night, falling to the Essex Trojans in the first round of regional play, 46-30.

This was the girls’ first game after a week of only practicing, so it’s safe to say that they were happy to be back on the floor. The ladies fought this game with all of their will, but still came up short.

The Ashbaugh sisters ended their career as Lady Devils as the top two scorers, with Sarah leading the team with 15 points and Olivia contributing six.

Rounding out the scoring for Mathews were Grayson Griffith (three points), and Avery Thomas, Serenity Forrest and Kayla Carr (two points apiece). The MHS girls finished out their season with a record of 7-17.
