ERMA VAUGHN MATTHEWS CALLIS

Erma Vaughn Matthews Callis, 92, of Gwynn, passed away April 20, 2016 with her family by her side.

While we are heartbroken by her death, we rejoice that she is in Heaven eternally with her Lord, and reunited with the love of her life, her husband, James Allen Callis.

Erma was a homemaker and loved helping her family. She also enjoyed crocheting, sewing and quilting. Lots of newborns in the area would come home from the hospital in sweaters, booties, hats and blankets crocheted by Erma. She also donated many pink and blue hats to the Riverside Hospital nursery over the years. Family members would receive handmade gifts for different occasions, until she could no longer see well enough to continue. She was a member of Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by a grandson, Adam Brooks.

She is survived by her children, Richard Callis (Diane), Annette Brooks (Jim), Paulette Ewell (Robert) and Dale Callis (Lynne); nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one niece, and three nephews. She is also survived by her constant companion, BooBoo.

The funeral was held at Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews, on Saturday, April 23, 2016, at 2 p.m., with burial at Gwynn’s Island Cemetery. The family received friends starting at 1 o’clock prior to the funeral.

The family would like to thank the staff of Riverside Convalescent Center-Mathews for the love and support shown to our mother over the past few years. Also, thanks to Riverside Hospice for being there to assist us with this transition.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, P.O. Box 385, Gloucester, Va. 23061.
