Enrollment slightly higher than projections in Mathews

Mathews County’s three public schools all stand in readiness for Tuesday’s opening day, with an enrollment slightly above budget projections, according to Superintendent of Schools Nancy Welch.

“I just can’t wait for the children to come back and fill our halls with laughter and joy,” Welch said.

“Our budget is based on 1,050, but our student information system shows 1,070,” Welch said. “As with all school divisions, enrollment will fluctuate as families move in and out of the county. We have had a few new students enrolling at each school.”

Parents and students got ready for the start of the school year yesterday afternoon, as all three schools held open houses from 3-7 p.m., getting a chance to meet the teachers and find out what’s in store once classes start on Tuesday.
