Enrollment numbers on target in Mathews

Enrollment is right on target for the 2015-2016 school year in Mathews, according to superintendent Nancy B. Welch.

Speaking during Tuesday’s school board meeting in the Mathews High School media center, Welch said that as of this past weekend, the school division has 1,110 students enrolled, which is exactly the number upon which this year’s budget is based.

Those numbers may change before the Sept. 8 opening day, and Welch was optimistic that the number may go up with out-of-county tuition students, a trend that has been on the rise in recent years. However, Welch cautioned that the numbers mean that the division will have to keep a sharp eye on expenses. “We’re still looking at a very tight budget this year,” she said.
