Emogene F. Coons, of Gloucester, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, September 7, 2025. Born on September 4, 1939, Emogene spent her early years in Gloversville, New York, where she met the love of her life, Mr. Gilbert M. Coons. The two married in October 1958 and soon welcomed five children. The family relocated to the Gloucester area in the early 1970s, creating a home that Emogene treasured until her death. The two were married 45 years at the time of Gil’s passing in 2003, but their love story continued on throughout all of Emogene’s life. Emogene was a devout Christian and attended Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church (formerly First Presbyterian Church) for more than 50 years. She cherished her church and her church family. Her relationship with the Lord was deep and unwavering. She is known by her family and her church for ‘putting it in God’s hands,’ which served her well. Emogene was preceded in death by her loving husband, Gilbert M. Coons; mother, and father, Edward and Nina Ferguson, and sister, Shirley Kratky. Left to honor her memory are her children, Bonnie Maurice, Randal Coons (Fran), Linda Sangeorge (Ronnie), Gilbert Coons (Crissy), and Todd Coons (Nancy), as well as her sister, Donna Chizek (Ronnie); 10 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. The funeral service, conducted by Pastor Jesse Hill, was held on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at Grace Covenant Church, 6470 Main Street, Gloucester, Va., at 2 p.m. The family received friends prior to the service, beginning at 1 o’clock. Interment followed at Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery in Hayes, Virginia. The family welcomed friends in the Grace Covenant Church reception hall after interment.
