Emma Mary Darnell was born on Feb. 1, 1925 in Gloucester County to the late Nick and Maude West Conway; she died peacefully at the age of 97 in Gloucester County on Friday, Sept. 2, 2022, surrounded by her children and family. In addition to her parents, her loving husband of 49 years, Charles Darnell; siblings, Buster, Julia, Demus, Louise, Everett, and Edith preceded her in death. She is survived by her beloved children, Charles Darnell (Nancy), Richard Darnell (Sandy), Jean Hogge (Wilson), Rachel Moffitt (Howard), and Allen Darnell (Susan), as well as her 69 grandchildren; great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, who knew her better as “Nanny.” She will be dearly missed by her family, including Brenda Bristow, Norma Jean Flippin, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Emma’s home was the site of hospitality, countless family gatherings, and much laughter and joy. She was never happier than when she was surrounded by her loved ones and making sure they were well fed. Besides her cooking, she had many other talents and interests. She loved quilting, sewing, gardening, and canning. She frequented all the local yard sales, she enjoyed cheesecake and black jellybeans, and collecting chickens and dolls. Always helpful, honest, strong, and trustworthy, her generosity touched the lives of family, friends, and beyond. Emma lived independently in her home until the age of 94.
Emma was blessed to live out her final three years with her daughter Jean and her son-in-law Wilson, with the assistance of her caretaker, Wanda Fletcher. The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 9, 2022, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home. A funeral service conducted by the Rev. Ann Tang will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022, in Salem United Methodist Church, where she was a member most of her adult life, 11408 Salem Church Road, Gloucester, Va. 23061, followed by interment in the church cemetery.
