Elsie D. Illg, age 104, of Gloucester, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 19, 2026. She was born on July 29, 1921 in Mathews County, Virginia, to Edgar Diggs and his wife Mary. Elsie is survived by her nieces, Patricia West, Bettye Johnson, and Susan Mangerchine; her nephews, James Diggs, Richard Diggs, and Andrew Diggs; and a special friend, Keith Bird, whom she affectionately called her “other son.” She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Walter Illg; her son, George, whose tragic passing at the age of 19 was the greatest sorrow of her life; her sister, Lois Palmer; her brother, Edward Diggs, and her nephew, William Diggs. Elsie’s life was marked by both accomplishment and joy. She built a respected and meaningful career at NASA Langley Research Center, where she served as a Metallurgical Technician. Her precision, attention to detail, and technical skill were highly regarded. Colleagues frequently sought her expertise, and she received numerous awards in recognition of the excellence and reliability of her work. She took quiet pride in contributing to advancements in aerospace research during a pivotal era in American space exploration. Beyond her professional achievements, Elsie cherished the simple pleasures of life. She was an avid golfer and proudly made a hole-in-one in 1977—-an accomplishment she remembered with great joy. After retirement, she and Walter enjoyed traveling together, especially to the Outer Banks, where they spent time at one of their favorite golf courses. Those trips remained among her fondest memories. Following her husband’s passing, Elsie spent the last 24 years of her life at Sanders Retirement Community. There she found comfort, companionship, and attentive care. In her later years, she was supported by a compassionate and dedicated team, including Gina Rowe, Ashley Bain, Pauline Hines, Tammy Hearn, and Barbara Kellum. Their kindness and professionalism brought her dignity and peace. Elsie will be remembered for her strength, resilience, intelligence, and steady presence. She lived through more than a century of change and progress, leaving behind a legacy of perseverance, achievement, and enduring love.
