ELECTION: Gloucester Board of Supervisors candidates

John Meyer Jr.

John Meyer Jr., 66, is serving his fourth year as an at-large member of the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors. He is running as a Republican in the Nov. 7 general election. He is opposed by Kevin Smith, an independent.

A firm believer in “having a plan,” Meyer said that he has ensured over the past four years that the board develop a strategic plan, which outlines the county’s vision, and defines near, mid- and long-term goals.

Elected to the board in 2013, Meyer served as chairman of the board in 2016. He was also the board’s liaison to the Gloucester Planning Commission and the Economic Development Authority, and as the vice chairman for the Virginia Association of Counties’ Governance Committee.

A conservative, Meyer said he has emphasized economic development and has fiercely advocated for accountability and efficiency in county operations.
