Elderly twin sisters were found deceased on a Gwynn’s Island beach last Thursday after a relative called the property’s lawn care service and asked that someone perform a welfare check. Mathews County Sheriff April Edwards said deputies and EMS were dispatched to Buckschase Road around noon after receiving a call about an unresponsive person who was found on the beach. Upon arrival at the scene, she said, it was learned that there were two unresponsive individuals at the scene—one in the water and the other on the shoreline of the Chesapeake Bay. Recovered were the bodies of Katia DeJarnette of Gwynn’s Island and Ashland, and Antonia De Coninck of France, who was visiting her sister. They were 85 years old. Edwards said that DeJarnette’s son was out of state and had talked to his mother and aunt the day before.
