Editorial: Who’s your baby?

The Virginia Department of Health keeps track of vital records: deaths, births, and … baby names. VDH let us know last week that the most popular baby names in 2025 were Liam for boys and Charlotte for girls. And then it told us much, much more. This is not really news: Liam and Charlotte have been in the top spot at least since 2020. For all baby boys, the top 15 names were Liam, Noah, Oliver, Theodore, Henry, William, James, Elijah, Lucas, John, Benjamin, Levi, Samuel, Thomas and Daniel. The top 15 for girls were Charlotte, Emma, Sophia, Olivia, Amelia, Isabella, Evelyn, Mia, Elizabeth, Eleanor, Ava, Eliana, Ailany, Lily and Sofia. VDH took a look back in time: in 2000, Jacob and Hannah topped the list of popular names. And in case your curiosity is piqued, the department said you can research popular names, by state, since 1960 on Social Security’s website. The tool is Popular Names by Decade....
