Whom do we honor as Memorial Day arrives?

The one million Americans lost to COVID-19? The brave soldiers of Ukraine, defending their country?

Officially and properly, Memorial Day remembers the ranks upon ranks of American service personnel who gave their lives for their country. It’s a solemn day, observed in appropriate ceremonies across the land. Freedom is not free. We do well to remember that.

And at the same time, we are mindful of current events, and the sacrifices being made by democracy-loving Ukrainians who are battling with every ounce of their being to protect their homeland. We must remember the Americans lost to Covid, whose lives were not in vain as their sufferings prompted some of the most rapid development of treatments and vaccines on record.

We have much to be thankful for.
