Editorial: Well done

Gloucester Court House has been accepted into the Virginia Main Street program, a designation that 1. underlines the special nature of this historic area and 2. places a feather in the cap of the hard-working Gloucester Main Street Association and its partner, the Gloucester Main Street Preservation Trust.

The state designation will bring funds and help the efforts to revitalize Main Street, a project that has made great strides already in the past decade. GMSA laid the foundation for many good things that have already happened, and brought new businesses to empty buildings.

And in Mathews, a state historic district designation is being sought and seems likely to be received for the village. One great benefit this would bring is eligibility for tax credits to renovate and restore structures.

At the same time, the Mathews Main Street Committee is seeking bids to proceed with the first stage of replacing and improving sidewalks. Façade improvement projects are already underway....
