Editorial: Voters as pawns

CNN quotes Steve Burke, a former economic advisor to President Trump, as calling nationwide redistricting efforts “atrocious” and as saying, “Politicians shouldn’t choose voters, voters should choose politicians.” Amen. Virginia has joined Texas and California in trying to move the political needle either to blue or red. Other states are considering it. Indiana rejected this path. Mid-decade redistricting disrupts communities of interest established after the decennial census. It splits them to reduce the voices or certain groups, and certainly causes confusion for those who may have been put into one congressional district, but now find themselves in another. All for political gain. Gerrymandering, once a disgusting tool of crooked politicians, is now the most prized chisel in the toolbox of those deepening our national divide....
