Editorial: Ups and downs in virus-ville

Mostly down. Public health concerns have forced people apart. School work suffers, business suffers, everyone has to put up with something. The hope of course is that the spread of the virus will suffer also.

One big downer last week was cancellation of the Group 1 state basketball finals. Mathews High School’s team was nearly on the bus when the call came through. But the “up” is a co-championship that will live forever in the record books. Out of more than 60 Group 1 schools in Virginia, Mathews fielded one of the very best boys’ basketball teams.

We wish to comment here on two more ups to help balance out the multitude of downs.

People mostly understand. They are showing patience in trying situations, and they realize that staying home now means fewer chances of exposure and a quicker end to the crisis.
