Editorial: Two good ideas

It may seem on the surface that nothing changes in Mathews County, but we are pleased to endorse two ideas that are simmering in spite of appearances. We do hope they will bubble to the top and take form.

1. The Chamber of Commerce. Efforts have been underway in recent months to reorganize the dormant chamber. It has not met for years. At one time the chamber was a vital force in local business affairs, and it is a very old organization. A meet-and-greet was held Chesapeake Bank Monday evening. 

It’s our hope to see a chamber meeting again regularly, working for the interest of the business community, and getting results. When people of similar interests work together, they advance not only their own agendas but a greater good as well.

2. An educational foundation. Many parents and teachers are deeply frustrated that funding for county schools never matches up to needs or salary requests; and on the other side, supervisors are frustrated by needs from every part of the co...
