Editorial: The rites of spring

The greening of the earth reminds us of the rituals forgotten during the long gray days of the winter months, and provokes us to go outdoors to soak up the warmth. This weekend brings the renewal of two venerated traditions: Historic Garden Week in Virginia, which has been observed locally for more than 80 years; and Earth Day, newer but possibly never of greater importance. Both traditions are celebrated in Section C of this week’s newspaper. Four beautiful homes and gardens will be open in Gloucester and Mathews as the Garden Club of Gloucester renews the local tour. Tradition, which seems to be disappearing throughout the world, is strong here. Gracious hosts and hostesses invite you to enjoy these private spots of beauty. Enjoy the garden tour, not only for what it offers, but also for the dedication of a small army of volunteers who have made it happen since the days of our great-grandmothers.
