Editorial: The pursuit of happiness

America’s first blast against English rule was the Jefferson-penned Declaration of Independence, which asserted, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

A high school student on the cusp of independence and adulthood wishes innately for all of these things, longing to be free of the constraints of childhood, embarking on the promised path of liberty to pursue his or her own happy path in life.

These yearnings have swelled the tidal wave of student voices demanding an end to the violence and bloodshed of school shootings … specifically, control of the semi-automatic weapons that unleash maximum pain in the shortest space of time, as occurred on Valentine’s Day in Parkland, Florida. The students have seized the moment and grabbed the nation’s attention.
