Editorial: The dream

From time to time we read surveys that the American dream is dead. We don’t believe it.

Not only are immigrants, legal or not, still flocking to our shores. Our own well-known neighbors and long-established acquaintances continue trying to pull in a bit of the dream.

A lingering recession, we hope, has just about drawn its last breath, but the truth remains that the robust recovery long ago enjoyed by Wall Street has not fully trickled down to Main Street. Things are far better than they were five years ago. They are not yet booming.

But in the face of the uncertainly, the spirit of entrepreneurship will not be denied. New businesses open, and are doing so steadily. We wish them well. People take on roles to represent well-known companies … not only the “heritage” companies such as Avon and Mary Kay, but relative newcomers such as Scentsy and Origami Owl, and many, many more.
