Editorial: Thank you, Ms. Garton

Thank you, Brenda Garton.

For those of you who may not remember, 2008 was a turbulent time in Gloucester County history.

It began on the evening of Jan. 2-3 with the dismissal of county administrator Bill Whitley and county attorney Danny Stuck. Following that, there was the hiring of three interim county administrators, a criminal investigation of the county board by the commonwealth’s attorney leading to the empanelment of a special grand jury, a spirited petition campaign to oust four supervisors from office, and, through it all, a lot of very unhappy residents.

That was the chaos that Brenda Garton stepped into when she accepted the position of county administrator in August of that year. She didn’t inject herself in the swirling controversy that had gripped Gloucester for the past eight months; she merely did her best to run the day-to-day operations of the county.
