Congress is on the cusp of keeping Americans permanently on Daylight Saving Time. The so-called “Sunshine Protection Act” passed the House of Representatives on Tuesday, July 14, in a bipartisan 308-117. Rob Wittman, our representative, voted in favor. The measure now heads to the Senate, which previously approved a version of the measure that was never enacted. President Trump said he supports it. We are likely headed for permanently altering the clock so that it is out of sync with nature … all for the sake of an extra hour of daylight in the evenings. But what about the mornings? This year, on standard time, the sun will rise at 7:15 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 21, the winter solstice. It’s hard to imagine sunrises at 8:15, but that will be the case on permanent saving time.
