History will come alive this summer as Virginia celebrates the semiquincentennial, the 250th anniversary, of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Virginia played a big role in the nation’s independence from the British with many events being held to commemorate its significance to the American Revolution this spring and summer.
Here is a list of Signature Events being organized by VA250, including a special Colonial Williamsburg celebration on Independence Day.
—“America’s Semiquincentennial Celebration: Inspiring a Season of Civic Renewal” will be held in Colonial Williamsburg on April 25;
—“Pen to Paper: The Civic Gospel of the Declaration of Independence” will be hosted at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello in Char-lottesville on May 2;
—“The Flame of Revolution: 250th Anniversary of The 5th Virginia Convention” will be a Colonial Williamsburg event the weekend of May 15-16;
—“Virginia Resolved: A Commemoration of Independence: 250th Anniversary of the Lee Resolution of Independence” will be held at Stratford Hall on June 7;
—George Washington’s Mount Vernon will be open for 250th anniversary events this summer;
—“Freedom Flows on the Potomac: Celebrating 250 Years of the Virginia Declaration of Rights” will be held at George Mason’s Gunston Hall & Old Town Alexandria the weekend of June 12-14;
—“Sail250 Virginia: Goodwill Tour with International Fleet of Tall Ships” will be hosted June 12-23 at the Port of Virginia in Norfolk;
—Juneteenth celebrations will be happening throughout the commonwealth on June 19;
—“Commemorating 250 Years of Forming a More Perfect Union” is a Colonial Williamsburg event that will be held on July 4;
—A commemoration for African Landing Day will be held at Fort Monroe in Hampton this August (more details to come);
—“The Turn of the Tide of Success: Kings Mountain” will be hosted at Barter Theatre in Abingdon the weekend of Oct. 2-4; and,
—The 250th anniversary of the Historic First Baptist Church will be celebrated on Oct. 9 in Colonial Williamsburg.
