Editorial: School days return

Temperatures are dropping a little (although we’re not out of the woods yet as far as the oppressive summer heat is concerned), kids are back on the gridiron getting ready for the upcoming football season and there’s a touch of fall in the air.
It may be hard to believe, but another school year is less than a week away. Time sure flies. It seems like high school graduation and the end of the 2024-2025 school year was only a week or two ago.
On Monday, students in Gloucester and Mathews counties will pile onto buses to begin a new year in the classroom. Students will ease into the day-to-day grid as the first two weeks of classes are only four days each. (Friday, Aug. 29 and Monday, Sept. 1 are both vacation days for students because of the Labor Day holiday. Virginia schools had been prohibited from beginning the year before Labor Day; that changed in 2019.)
