Editorial: Restoring faith

There is so much to worry about in this country … shootings by police, shootings of police, protests, arrests … it finally leaves you—an appalled spectator—speechless, wondering where and when the next tragedy will erupt. And it causes many of us to lose our faith in humanity.

So it is a wonderful relief to see just the opposite happening in our community, where the determined effort of one woman has resulted in the collection of hundreds of donations and tens of thousands of dollars to benefit another woman. And she has done so successfully.

We speak here of Mathews County teacher Amy Ashberry, who took on the seemingly impossible dream of Alyssa Briggs to obtain a handicapped-accessible vehicle. Briggs, a 2013 Mathews High School graduate, was paralyzed in an accident when she was six years old. As an adult, she yearned for the independence this vehicle would give her. And now that dream will soon become a reality.
