Editorial: Remnants with a proud legacy

The national news this week reminds us that World War II ended seven decades ago … a date so far back in time that most of our residents cannot recall it, and may not have anyone in their families who experienced that period.
Three news stories this week remind us that Gloucester, Mathews and all of our surrounding counties went all out in this effort to defeat totalitarian threats on continents east and west.
The King and Queen County Board of Supervisors recognized all those who served in uniform during the war, and two veterans were there to receive the citation.
Former Mathews County supervisor Tom Mangrum will be among members of the 761st Tank Battalion in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 7 for the 2015 American Veterans Center Honors. His unit, composed mostly of black soldiers, fought for weeks across Europe in the final push to victory.
