Editorial: Progress, or not

The Virginia Senate, in addition to the hopeful measure mentioned above, has approved three bills which, if they make their way through both houses of the General Assembly, conference committees, and the governor’s pen, will alter the state’s way of life.

 

Ethics: A $250 cap on value of tangible gifts to lawmakers appears likely. This will not include intangibles such as trips or meals; but, given the former governor’s “Giftgate” mess, it is a start.

 

Mental health: The Senate has advanced the Creigh Deeds-sponsored legislation to increase to 24 hours the time an individual may be held until a spot in a mental health facility is found. The Deeds story is compelling as he was seriously injured last fall by his son who was suffering a mental health crisis; and then the son killed himself. Deeds survived to help others get the assistance they need.
