Editorial: Proceed with caution

Virginia begins to reopen its businesses on Friday, in a very limited way, in a manner that will satisfy very few.Enter at your own risk. You are on your own.

Regardless of the maskless, screaming, honking protestors, it’s not yet safe to mingle freely with our fellow citizens. COVID-19 cases are still increasing daily in Virginia, by the hundreds. Deaths continue.

The phased reopening is only a signal that now the medical community is better prepared for a surge in cases, compared to where it stood two months ago.

There’s still no silver-bullet cure and no vaccine. There’s no quick, generally available test. The best way to avoid infection from this virus is to keep yourself and your loved ones from other people as much as possible.

You are really on your own, for now.

We have to rely on science rather than wishful thinking to get us out of this scourge.
