Editorial: Playtime for all

Cast your mind back to your days as a child. How you loved to climb, to run, to swing, to try every piece of equipment on the playground! The fun of just plain playtime was a vital piece of childhood and the activity was important in gaining strength and coordination as you grew.

Was there ever a child on the sideline in a wheelchair or on a walker who could not join in? Surely that child’s heart yearned as strongly as yours to sample the adventures right before your eyes.

Gloucester County, in 2009, opened its first accessible playground at the Fary’s Mill Road entrance of Beaverdam Park. It is working on a second to be installed at Woodville Park.

We would love to see a similar effort in Mathews County, so all the children can enjoy the playground at the Mathews Park.

Katey Legg, director of Gloucester Parks, Recreation and Tourism, gave us a little information about the county’s effort to include everyone in playtime.
