Editorial: Old Man Winter

Old Man Winter has settled in for at least a week with plenty of frigid air, some ice, and some snow. The frozen landscape will thaw slowly: going into next week, days will rarely exceed the freezing mark and nights will be in the teens. State officials have kept us updated on the aftereffects of the weekend storms. People showed good sense, and stayed home: over the weekend, according to the governor’s office, traffic volume on the interstate was 80 percent lower than usual. Virginia State Police, as of Monday afternoon, reported a total of 506 crashes, 38 with injuries, two fatalities, during the duration of the storm. That’s statewide. The Virginia Department of Transportation has done an excellent job clearing the icy crust off the roads. Our primary roads are in good shape, and the secondary roads are improving.
