County administrators will tell you they serve at the pleasure of the board of supervisors. Usually, a county employee who has built a career in a community will get a plaque, a handshake, and public recognition when leaving the position. Not Carol Steele. She got shown the door with very little ceremony in a 4-3 vote on Monday night. True confession: The first two sentences paraphrase what we wrote in January 2008 after the county board cut off the employment of the veteran administrator who had served in the position for 23 years. The public did not see that coming, the public did not like it, and Gloucester went into an uproar that was not resolved for many months. The public did not like it then, and we predict the public will not like what happened Monday night. Carol Steele came to the county as director of parks and recreation 39 years ago. She has been administrator since 2022. The board could have found a better way....
