Editorial: National Newspaper Week

Next week will be celebrated as the 85th annual National Newspaper Week. With more and more people finding their information from social media and other sources, old school newspapers, such as we are, may seem, on its surface, redundant or even irrelevant.
However, nothing could be further from the truth.
If some national story captures the public’s imagination, you’re bound to find reams of information—some true, some slanted and biased, some outright false—about it online.
But where would you turn if the planning commission recommends approval of a new subdivision down the block from you? Or if your school board is struggling to find teachers to fill positions in the neighborhood elementary school? Or perhaps if planned VDOT roadwork will make your daily commute twice as long as usual?
