Editorial: Looking good

The improvements along Main Street in Mathews wrapped up with little fanfare a few weeks ago.

Now, instead of orange barrels to weave around, visitors and residents passing through can see the results, and appreciate the thought and care that went into the project.

The number of parking spaces remains pretty much unchanged. Turning from side streets onto Main seems to be easier. Beautiful streetlights on posts illuminate the road at night.

A new disruption will begin soon, as contractors work to replace aging drainage systems and, it is hoped, to relieve the periodic flooding on Main Street. It is a large project and will last a long time but, like the street improvements themselves, is designed to make the village a more attractive and functional spot for the community to enjoy.

These improvements, along with the hoped-for revival of the Mathews County Chamber of Commerce, point to hopes for a more active and healthy business community.
