Editorial: Long overdue

Those who complain that government never does anything for us … that all politicians do is take our tax dollars and give us nothing in return … will have to sing a different tune this week.

On Monday, President Joe Biden signed into law the historic Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. This $1.2 trillion act includes $550 billion of new spending to rebuild roads and bridges, water infrastructure, resilience, internet and more. In addition, the package includes roughly $650 billion in previously authorized funding for roads and other infrastructure.

For years, leaders of both parties have been pushing for an investment in hard infrastructure. In fact, it was part of then-candidate Donald Trump’s platform in the 2016 election. There doesn’t seem to be an argument that everything from our dilapidated highways and failing bridges to our inadequate broadband internet coverage in rural America need some financial TLC.
