Significant events deserve our best efforts at recognition.
One year from now, the nation will observe the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence: our semiquincentennial. Most likely the majority of people will, as they should, call it the 250th.
This milestone is worth a grand, grand party. Committees in Gloucester and Mathews are making plans and have already held some preliminary events.
They are following in the footsteps of county leaders who, in 1976, put on a great show and celebration.
A recent cruise through old files found a tri-fold flyer, “Let’s have a Bicentennial Celebration in Gloucester County.”
The flyer from half a century ago stated, “The Bicentennial years offer a rare opportunity for those of us who live, work, and play in Gloucester to pay tribute to this lovely county and its early people, and to the roles each played in the formation and development of Virginia and the nation.
