Editorial: Let’s bring back the Mathews Chamber

There was a time when the Mathews Chamber of Commerce was a vital part of the community. That’s not the case anymore. But maybe things are about to change.

Tonight, a meeting will be held in Mathews Court House to consider the possibility of revitalizing the Mathews County Chamber of Commerce. For the sake of the business community—and the community in general—we hope it’s a success.

A vibrant Chamber of Commerce can do so much for a community. For example, take a look at Gloucester.

Under the direction of its executive director Gloria Williams and its Board of Directors, the Gloucester Chamber has raised the profile of the county’s businesses, successfully marketed Gloucester to the rest of the region and state, promoted Shop Local initiatives, provided an opportunity for members to network in an informal setting in its monthly Business After Hours socials, and held quarterly educational breakfast sessions designed to help members grow their businesses...
