Editorial: Landmark bridge

A few months ago it seemed a good time for the state to come up with a plan to prevent the constant problems and repairs found necessary at the Milford Haven Bridge that connects Gwynn’s Island to the mainland of Mathews County. Hot days of summer had led to something new: having the fire department spray water on the works to cool them enough that the bridge could be closed and locked.
Someone took note. Now we learn that large-scale repairs to that aged structure are planned for next year. Well done, Virginia Department of Transportation.
We also learned more in reporting on a recent meeting of the Gwynn’s Island Civic League.
VDOT’s Fredericksburg District Engineer Annette Adams, speaking to the league, said the bridge, constructed in 1938 and opened the next year, has two claims to distinction:
It is the oldest moveable bridge in Virginia;
It opens the most of any such bridges.
