Editorial: Know your school board

Although they lack independent taxing authority in Virginia, school boards nevertheless wield a great deal of power through the administration of their budgets, which in most counties makes up the lion’s share of local tax dollars.

School boards are also charged with taking care of the community’s most precious resource—its children. They supervise the teachers, principals, bus drivers, aides, cafeteria workers and countless other employees who, day-in and day-out, teach, guide and inspire these young men and women entrusted to their care.

Schools often form the center of their communities, from hosting high school basketball and football games to serving as the site for concerts, plays, fundraising dinners and other events for civic groups. School board members are the ones tasked with keeping the lights on and making sure everything goes right.
