Editorial: It’s back

Sometime in the past week, the Confederate battle flag has rejoined the national flag at the base of the Confederate monument on Mathews Court Green. As before, the person placing the flag is unknown.

Apparently the county has no policy or procedure for placing flags on the people’s public property, so possibly we can expect the Union Jack, United Nations flag, Gadsden flag, or even a Disney banner to appear next. It’s time for the board of supervisors to take charge of this space.

In the meantime, we are left to wonder: what does this insistent gesture say to those who disagree with it? ...
