Editorial: Good things

Good intentions often lead to no results, but in this season they have a way of developing into good things.

 

We have in mind, for instance, the Made in Mathews Open Studio Tour that has endured and grown over many Thanksgiving weekends. At a time that local streets may otherwise be deserted as shoppers go for the big bargains elsewhere, Mathews Court House is swamped with visitors looking for a good meal and finds in the shops. They have been lured to the county by the pleasure, often repeated annually, of visiting artists and crafters at their home studios.

 

In a similar vein, efforts to increase traffic on Gloucester’s Main Street have turned into a solid weekend of activities such as the one just behind us, although no one can prevent bad weather that will dampen some enthusiasm. A parade one day, business open houses the next, and many opportunities to visit Santa Claus, translate into a good time to see the village and do some business.
