Editorial: Give a hand to the bands

If you haven’t seen it yet, visit the Gloucester High School Marching Dukes’ page on Facebook and find the link to their YouTube video.

In that video, the GHS band combined with bands from Peasley and Page Middle Schools in a virtual presentation of “Pomp and Circumstance.” It is grand, a serving of normal in a far-from-normal year.

Performing singly in their homes, isolated from their classmates in this year of COVID-19 quarantine, the musicians put together an able rendition of that high school graduation standard. It is their gift to the Class of 2020.

Singly from cars with their families, GHS seniors have marched across a stage, in hundreds of mini ceremonies, to receive their diplomas.

This school year has been like no other, and we hope it is like none to follow. Students have weathered the interruption to their studies and fellowship with grace, and the combined music of the county school bands is a grace note for seniors who have completed their careers.
