Editorial: Exciting times along Main Street

Anyone who’s seen Gloucester’s Main Street over the past decade has noticed the remarkable transformation. The new shops. The sidewalks and façade improvements. The overall beautification of an area that was once threatened to go the way of many small-town Main Streets across this country.

The Gloucester Main Street Association and the Main Street Preservation Trust deserve much of the credit for this modern-day renaissance. And now, added to all that has been done in recent years, two projects have the potential to step it up to another level.

The old Bank of Gloucester building, with its majestic columns, appears to be getting a new life following its acquisition by Gloucester Revolving Loan Fund, announced last week. When SunTrust (the most recent bank to operate from the Main Street building) closed that location late last year and moved to Fox Mill Centre, it created an opportunity.
