Editorial: Enemies

Richard Nixon had an enemies list.

It appears the Obama administration may have one as well, with reports of its agencies’ shenanigans: the IRS in targeting conservative groups, and the Justice Department by subpoenaing Associated Press and Fox News phone records.

Friends, it is hard to describe either scenario as anything other than an apparent but unspoken attempt at intimidation. In politics, as in so much of life these days, it seems that the end justifies the means.

Until you get caught. Then the finger-pointing starts.

Of course it is much too early to make a final judgment on either of these current situations, but frankly, they smell bad. Things that smell bad must be investigated to find the source. If the boss did not know, the underlings who protected him need to go. If the boss did know … well, Nixon set a precedent for that as well.
