Editorial: Earth Day—another view

Going beyond the events of recent days, we look backward to 1970, when Earth Day was established and, for the first time, celebrated on April 22. There was great hope, and indeed the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act followed. Today an active political element seeks to roll back regulations and discredit clean, renewable energy. The thrill of making a positive change is gone. So, we turn to another view to put our fragile Earth in perspective. NASA has reported that astronauts, upon viewing Earth from outer space, “have described feeling awed by the astonishing sight.” They experience a phenomenon known as the overview effect.
