Editorial: Check them out

Fifty years ago, Mathews County mover and shaker Clare Jones wrote a letter of appreciation to the Gazette-Journal. What she said then about Mathews Memorial Library is still true, and applies as well to the helpful staff of the Gloucester Library.

In part: “Our library is a fine place to visit. Miss Dahlia Callis is always ready and helpfully willing to find the particular book that might best serve your need. We are grateful for the Mathews Memorial Library. It is a source of happy hours of reading and opportunity for learning.”

Today the only thing different, in both Gloucester and Mathews, is the relocation and immense growth of the counties’ public libraries. We are so fortunate to have these institutions for the common good, open to all, helpful to all, cornerstones of a well-informed and educated community.

National Library Week in 2014 is April 13-19. We urge members of the public not familiar with our excellent local libraries to visit them. ...
