We are in the limbo period between the “Presidents’ Day” holiday on Feb. 16, and the real birthday of George Washington, Father of Our Country, on Feb. 22. We put Presidents’ Day in quotation marks, because officially the holiday remains Washington’s Birthday. The occasion is worthy of reflection. We thought it might be enlightening, at this point of 250 years of national history, to bring you some of the timeless words of our first President and first Citizen, the gentleman from Mount Vernon. In his farewell address made in 1796, announcing that he would not seek a third term in office and that he would be forever grateful to the nation for its trust in him, Washington spoke on the new nation’s form of government: “The constancy of your support was the essential prop of [his governance] efforts, and a guarantee of the plans by which they were effected.
