Editorial: Blue Devil proud

And what also makes this time of year special are spring sports winding up successful seasons. In Mathews, two teams made it all the way to the state championship game. And, for the first time in Mathews High School history, the girls brought home a state title in tennis.

For the past few years, tennis teams coached by LaDonna Crain have pretty much dominated the eastern region, but they haven’t been able to get past the powerhouse schools in the West. This year, however, the girls finally did it.

On June 7, the girls defeated Region 1A West runner-up Auburn, 5-0, to earn a bid in the VHSL championship game. It marked the first time a team from the East had made it to the finals since 1993. That’s quite an accomplishment.

While they couldn’t get over that final hurdle as a team, the Lady Devils put together an amazing season. And that wasn’t all.
