Editorial: America is better

We are appalled at the thinly-veiled bigotry being expressed by some on the presidential campaign trail.

Their words are cloaked in calls for security, or economic prosperity, or some other anxiety we supposedly nourish in our inner beasts, but sadly what they express is pure bigotry. More sadly, many Americans appear to be giving these sentiments their wholehearted support.

Here, we think, is the philosophy behind these maneuverings: instill fear, win elections. Perhaps it is time to remember what Richard M. Nixon said: “People react to fear, not love; they don’t teach that in Sunday school, but it’s true.”

America is better than this. ...
