Editorial: A well-deserved salute

All gave some. Some gave all.

When it comes to sacrificing in the defense of our nation, the residents of this community have gone above and beyond. May a special month to honor and remember their contributions, beginning with this weekend’s Mathews May Faire.

On Saturday, May Faire will pay tribute to the men and women who have served or are continuing to serve in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard and Merchant Marine in its “Salute to the Military.”

The star-spangled tribute will include a Wall of Remembrance in the Mathews Historical Museum on Main Street—photos of more than 800 Mathews residents, past and present, who have worn the uniform in times of peace and war. That morning, local World War II veterans will take part in a conversation, providing a rare opportunity to hear first-hand from the men and women of the Greatest Generation.
