Editorial: A remarkable season

An undefeated regular season. An unbelievable comeback in the regional semifinals. A school-record 22 wins. A first-ever appearance in the state championship game.

Those were just a few of the many accomplishments of this year’s Gloucester High School field hockey team. While they didn’t win that final game on Saturday afternoon, the Lady Dukes are still every bit the champions. The sting of the loss in the title game will soon wear off, replaced by the pride of having put together one heck of a season. The Gloucester girls showed themselves to be skilled competitors with an unconquered spirit.

Speaking of remarkable seasons, we also tip our hat to Mathews High School cross country. Both the boys and girls finished in fourth place in Saturday’s state meet, each tying for the most successful teams in that program’s history.
