Editorial: A job well done

Mathews High School graduation is done, and next up is GHS. The Dukes of 2020, regardless of COVID-19, will finish their incredible years of public education in a rolling wave next week, avoiding the big crowds but, we hope, getting some feeling of a job well done from the authorities.

MHS Blue Devils of 2020 had the same experience on Sunday.

We feel their discouragement at being cut short in their senior year. On the other hand, we look at the very conservative numbers of COVID cases in our communities, rarely increasing, and hope they realize that their sacrifice was a big part in keeping the local caseload pretty low.

Their years in public school may be over, but COVID is not, and it presents fresh challenges for the coming school year, upcoming planned festivals, and the ability to move and interact freely in the community.

We wish everyone trying to develop a vaccine effective and speedy success.
